Dans le quartier de Neubau à Vienne, une magnifique maison de ville Biedermeier-Vienna abrite depuis plus de 100 ans la Werkstätte Carl Auböck. À l'intérieur de l'atelier, où la production se poursuit encore aujourd'hui, d'innombrables objets garnissent les étagères, les murs, les tables et les bureaux.
L'artiste et designer viennois Carl Auböck II était l'un des plus excentriques, des plus charmants et des plus collectionnables des designers modernes du site . Il s'agit d'un talent singulier qui s'est spécialisé dans les petits accessoires de bureau et les pièces de table telles que les tire-bouchons, les presse-papiers , les ouvre-lettres , les serre-livres et les bouchons de bouteille. Il a réalisé ces pièces en combinant le métal - le plus souvent le laiton - et des matériaux élémentaires tels que le cuir, le bois noueux et la corne d'animal, créant des formes qui pourraient presque être Surrealist, des mains et des pieds aux clés, aux oiseaux et aux amibes.
Enfant, Auböck est précoce et artistique. Il étudie le dessin et se forme en même temps dans l'atelier de son père, Karl Heinrich Auböck, un fabricant populaire de figurines traditionnelles en bronze et d'objets de collection. En 1919, Carl II se rend en Allemagne pour étudier au Bauhaus , où il est l'élève de l'artiste et théoricien progressiste Johannes Itten. Si le Bauhaus est surtout associé à l'architecture fonctionnaliste et rigide de ses directeurs Walter Gropius et Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, l'école était en réalité un lieu libéral et plein d'entrain - un creuset pour l'art et le design imaginatifs, ludiques et d'avant-garde. C'est cet esprit qui a imprégné l'œuvre de Carl II dès son départ en 1921.
En 1922 ou 23, Carl Auböck II revient à Vienne pour s'occuper de son père malade et reprend l'affaire. Il a créé la Werkstätte Carl Auböck et un héritage qui a valu à ses objets un statut de culte auprès des collectionneurs. L'entreprise a été transmise à ses descendants, qui dirigent l'atelier encore en activité aujourd'hui. Aujourd'hui, les objets conçus par Carl II représentent 90 % de la production de la Werkstätte Carl Auböck, rejoints par les créations de l'architecte et designer Carl IV, son petit-fils.
Les designs vintage de By/One ont un caractère particulier, une patine qui ne fait que souligner à quel point les pièces ont été aimées et utilisées. Les petits meubles de Carl Eleg - porte-revues en cuir ou en canne ; tables d'appoint en bois à bord libre avec des pieds tubulaires en bronze ; chariots de service en osier avec des roues en bois de hêtre tourné - sont élégants et utiles. Ses objets de bureau bijoux, ses outils de bibliothèque, ses cendriers et ses articles de bar témoignent d'une sorte de praticité joyeuse. Ils semblent poser la question suivante : "Si vous avez besoin d'un tire-bouchon, d'un presse-papier ou d'un chandelier , pourquoi ne pas en faire un objet aussi amusant que fonctionnel ? Et d'ailleurs, pourquoi pas ?
