Un nom omniprésent dans le monde de l'architecture et du design contemporains, Philippe Starck a tout créé, des intérieurs d'hôtels aux yachts de luxe en passant par les brosses à dents et les bouilloires en teck. Pourtant, pour chaque projet de son portefeuille diversifié, Starck a conservé une signature immédiatement reconnaissable : un look qui est dynamique, épuré, fluide et plein d'esprit.

Fils d'un ingénieur aéronautique, Starck a étudié l'architecture d'intérieur à l'École Nissim de Camondo à Paris. Il a commencé sa carrière de designer dans les années 1970 en décorant des boîtes de nuit de la ville, et sa réputation pour ses intérieurs originaux et pleins d'entrain lui a valu d'être chargé en 1983 par le président français François Mitterrand de concevoir les appartements privés du palais de l'Élysée. Starck s'est fait connaître à l'échelle internationale en 1988 en concevant les intérieurs de l'hôtel Royalton à New York, un environnement d'une nouveauté saisissante, caractérisé par des moquettes et des tissus d'ameublement aux tons de joaillerie et par des meubles aux cadres en aluminium moulé de forme organique. Il a suivi en 1990 avec une refonte tout aussi impressionnante de l'hôtel Paramount à Manhattan, un projet qui présentait des meubles surdimensionnés ainsi que des têtes de lit qui imitaient les peintures de Old Masters.

À l'instar de leur créateur, les pièces de mobilier signées Starck semblent apprécier l'attention. Des modèles tels que le fauteuil club de la série J en forme de coin, la chaise Costes en acajou moulé, la lampe de table provocante Ara ou le tabouret sinueux WW ne manquent jamais de susciter l'admiration. D'autres pièces de Starck font des clins d'œil postmodernes à des designs historiques. Son fauteuil en polycarbonate Louis Ghost apporte une nouvelle touche au mobilier Louis XVI; sa chaise Out-In offre une version futuriste de la chaise classique anglaise à haut dossier. Mais malgré tout son flair, Starck conserve une vision populiste du design. Alors que l'un de ses fauteuils Prince de Fribourg et Treyer en édition limitée peut atteindre 7 000 dollars, une chaise en plastique de Starck pour l'entreprise italienne KARTEL est disponible pour environ 250 dollars.
