About the Item

With the period of Phnom Udong, Buddhist art is at its peak and the themes of Buddhism are put forward although the Hindu legends are still represented. This style is marked by monumental works where the aesthetic shows a true return to realism. Made from a wax cast, this Buddha is a perfect testimony of the will of the artists of the time to transcribe closer to the real. He is dressed in the traditional monastic dress, which bare the right shoulder, and which falls into a stole from the left shoulder on the front and back. Very simple, the garment is delicately edged with Fine stripes and enveloping the body in a drape without folds. This stylization, or even this transparency of the robe comes here expressing the exceptional radiance of the body of Buddha. This "mark" is, with the "folds of beauty" of the neck, prominent chest, fingers of equal length or "Usniça" - cranial protuberance, seat of his supramundain knowledge - one of the many attributes of perfection Granted to the Blessed One according to a canonical list. The headdress is made up of rows of small loops rising to the bottom of the Usniça, symbol of the union between the earth and the sky. It is delimited on the forehead by a thin bandage which releases the ears with the very elongated lobes and the face with the pure oval. The realism given to the Master is also shown in the details like the apparent nipple, the emphasis of the belly button by an incrustation of glass or the decorations around the neck and on the foot. The features are exquisitely delicate, adding to the beauty of the Buddha. The arched eyebrow meet at the root of the nose and extend to its extremity. The eyelids, strongly curved and very stretched outwards, are lowered on the internal contemplation.
