About the Item

A fantastic Chinese Han Dynasty archaic bronze ritual wine vessel, hu, and cover, ex. Michael Goedhuis, Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD), China. The archaic ritual bronze hu of typical form, with a tall, splayed foot, bulbous body, tall and wide neck, and slightly everted mouth. The hu is surmounted by its original fitted domed cover featuring three zoomorphic upright rings. The generous globular body of the hu features a simple design of three wide bands cast in high relief that circumscribe the vessel. Another wide and raised band forms the mouth rim. A pair of loose ring handles with taotie monster masks have been attached to the shoulders. The bronze displays a remarkable and magnificent patina of mottled green malachite, red cuprite, and blue azurite. The original rich gilding is still visible on parts of the body and the loose ring handles.  An inventory sticker from Michael Goedhuis Gallery to the interior. Also with the original sales receipt dated 2003.  Hu form a major part of the repertoire of Chinese archaic bronzes. Their main function was to hold and serve wine in ritual settings, including ancestor worship and banquets. The form was later copied in pottery as offering vessels for the afterlife. Provenance: Bonnell TC Gardner (1946 - 2008) Michael Goedhuis Gallery 2003

Chinese Bronze Scholar Vase with Taotie, Ming/Qing Dynasty, 17th century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A small and interesting cast bronze archaistic scholar vase with loose ring handles and taotie mask design, late Ming or early Qing Dynasty, mid 17th century, China. The small vase of archaistic hu form, and cast with archaistic designs. Sitting on a tall splayed ring foot, the round body is cast with a large band featuring a ferocious taotie (ogre) mask. The taotie mask in this case id decidedly feline, with a ruyi shaped snout above a whiskered mouth. Two flanges stick out to either side of the mask, reminiscent of ears. A wide, tall neck rises from the body, terminating in a slightly everted mouth. The archaistic cast design on the neck is not as clear, but most likely represents Fusang, a mythical island in the Eastern Sea where the legendary Fusang tree grows. The Fusang tree, home to the mythical Sun Bird...
