About the Item

Large porcelain planter with gilt bronze ornamentation, made during the Meiji era (1868-1912) by a Japanese craftsman. This rare and unusual object, oval in shape, is surrounded at the top by a raised frieze alternating geometric motifs and floral scrollwork. The body of the planter is painted with a nuanced background of ochre tones. Above, a Japanese scene depicts a young courtesan in traditional clothing blown by the wind, showing a child the direction to follow. On the other side, another young woman appears to be looking in their direction. This work thus tells a story, faithful to Japanese poetry. A unique and charismatic creation, combining porcelain and rich bronze ornamentation. Indeed, on the neck, we find a finely chiseled openwork gilt bronze gallery. On each side, handles depict magnificent dragons in flight. The base is ornate and adorned with refined scrolls. This substantial planter will captivate you with its autumnal colors and exquisite decorations. ******** Period: Late 19th century Very good condition.
