About the Item
This Sashiko b(h)anten was made around 1950 in Showa era in Japan.
On the front, it is written 'Member of fire brigade OYodocho' in Japanese.
Oyodocho is the town where is in Nara prefecture in Japan.
Sashiko banten is a hanten for firefighters, which is made of cotton and finely stitched with thread. It is great in water absorbency and water retention characteristics. It was invented in Edo period which fires were frequent.
Sashiko is also used in judo and kendo uniforms, among which the fireman's hanten, which has been handed down since the Edo period, has a large crest painted on the back.
Sashiko banten, which were made of two or three layers of fabric and decorated with fine stitches, were in full use.
When a fire broke out, the firefighters would go out in their sturdy, easy-to-move hanten and cover their heads with water. The Hanten, which was filled with water, protected the firefighters from the dangerous sparks of fire that fell on them. Gloves and hoods called "shuto" were also covered with stitches.
The firefighters who played a major role in extinguishing the fire turned their hanten inside out. The townspeople looked at them with admiration as the fire extinguishers returned home with ease, showing the dynamic and brave pictures on the reverse side of their coats.
