About the Item

This bowl is made from Tokoname ware, a type of pottery from Aichi Prefecture. Tokoname ware has a history dating back to the 12th century, and there are still several active kilns today (marked with a red circle on the attached map). This particular bowl was originally made as the lid for a large urn. In Japan, there has been a tradition of placing Buddhist scriptures in containers made of copper pipes or pottery and burying them for future preservation. This bowl was made as a lid for such a container. You can view reference images, so please check them for confirmation. Because of its historical significance, this item holds great value and reflects the passage of time. The current form is reminiscent of a mortar, suggesting that it may have been used practically. However, it was originally created for religious purposes. Additionally, around the 14th century, this type of mortar became widely used as a household item in Japan. This bowl is unglazed, with a simple, fired texture that preserves the natural feel of the clay. This feature evokes the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, providing a quiet charm to those who admire it. Due to its relatively low firing temperature, this piece has a texture similar to that of earthenware. You can feel the rawness and warmth of the clay, which gives it a unique texture not found in other pottery. There is some damage to the rim, but it has been repaired, and the beautiful form, which speaks to its history, has been maintained. The marks left by the wheel during shaping are faintly visible, which adds to the charm of the bowl. The size is approximately 32 cm in diameter and 13 cm in height. It is beautiful as a display piece, but it can also be used as a flower vase. When using it as a vase, please place the water in a separate container, as water placed directly in the bowl will seep through the clay. With its simple yet profound beauty, this bowl blends seamlessly into both traditional Japanese rooms and modern interiors, harmonizing with any décor. This bowl is a rare piece that evokes a sense of quiet time and allows you to immerse yourself in the world of wabi-sabi. Weight: 1.95 kg
