About the Item

This is an old Japanese iron block. Weighing a whopping 46 kg, it was once used by blacksmiths as an “anvil” to be embedded in the ground. It is estimated to have been made in the early Showa period (1900s-1940s), and it is said to have been half-submerged in the ground to receive a large hammer in order to release the impact of heavy forging to the ground. The tool can be considered a prototype of the modern anvil, and the way it is rooted to the ground shows the resilience of Japanese craftsmanship. An anvil, which is buried in the ground, is a device that is integrated with the floor to increase stability and support work that requires strong blows. The surface of this piece, which has been dug up, has been carved with traces of repeated sparks, dents, cracks, and iron filings, giving it a unique presence with the shadows created by the rough texture and the deep luster created by the oxidized coating of many years. Now that its former role has ended, its rugged appearance has been sublimated into a sculpture of pure materiality, and it has gained new life as an industrial art piece that enhances a space. The cracks and chips that cannot be created by man-made materials and the unique weight of steel tell the viewer a story of time and gravity. It has a high degree of perfection as a sculptural work just by placing it, and it is a beautiful enough object just by being there.
