About the Item

This is an old Japanese Daruma figure stone, suiseki (viewing stone). The place where it was found is an old house that has been built over the years. It is a folk Buddhist image that has been preserved by people for a long time. Although it is difficult to identify the specific period of time, from the texture and appearance, we assume that it was made before World War II. Although it is a completely natural stone, its appearance is reminiscent of a daruma doll. In particular, the composition of the black portion of the face seems to have been intentionally minimally processed, revealing the owner's faith and playful spirit. The gradation that spreads from light gray to dark brown, the natural cracks and weathering marks on the stone skin. All of them were created over a long period of time and have a formative beauty that cannot be reproduced by human hands. The figure of Daruma is a symbol of “seven falls and eight rises,” and has been loved as a good-luck talisman since ancient times. This stone, too, when placed quietly in place, is an entity that gives serenity and power to a space. On a display shelf, in an alcove, or in a Zen space. It is a gem that reminds us of the spirit of “wabi-sabi” cherished by the Japanese. Weight: 2.3 kg __________________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
