About the Item

Magnificent and powerful, fantastically sculptural, ferocious bronze Japanese writhing sea dragon candleholder is coiled around itself, with an uplifted head and a stylized plume of water spouting from the dragon’s mouth, which forms the base for the removable 3-branch candelabra. This sculpture, with its removable candleholder, reveals the technical brilliance and vibrant imagination that characterize much Meji-period Japanese art. The dragon is perched upon a round, footed base with ‘seigaiha’, which is a repetitive wave pattern of layered concentric circles creating arches, symbolic of waves or water and representing surges of good luck. It symbolizes power and resilience. Bronze has a shiny rich chocolate patina with a hint of red. Measures approximately 16” high x 9” wide 7.5” deep with the candelabra attached. Measures approximately 12” high by 7.5” in diameter without the candelabra. candleholder openings are approximately 1" in diameter. Weighs approximately 5 pounds. The Meiji Restoration of 1868 was accompanied by severe economic turmoil that placed great financial strains on nearly every area of Japanese artistic production. Forced to seek patronage wherever they could find it, many artists and craftsmen looked to the West to find markets for their works. The Japanese government supported this endeavor in the hope of enhancing the reputation of Japanese industry and culture within the international Community. As a result, during the last quarter of the 19th century, a significant portion of Japan's cultural economy shifted its energies to the production of export goods for the European and American markets. Although many of the techniques, forms, and decorative motifs remained the same as in traditional Japanese arts, Meiji craftsmen also deliberately incorporated qualities intended to appeal to Western sensibilities. Hence many Meiji export objects were elaborately crafted and ornately decorated in styles that harmonized with the Victorian and Edwardian tastes dominant in Western culture at that time.
