About the Item

This large wooden mortar dates to the late 19th century and was originally used for crushing rice, grain, spices and other foodstuffs. Carved from a single tree trunk, the mortar has a smoothly worn interior bowl from years of use. The exterior is smooth to the touch with a burnished patina, further textured by blade marks and the irregular wear of antique wood. A large split to one side has been mended with a repurposed iron plate, a charming repair that hints at the mortar's long, storied history. Today, the large rice mortar brings organic texture and form to modern interiors as an unexpected catch-all or a cachepot for houseplants. Additional Dimensions: Interior: 12.5"W x 12"D x 15"H
