About the Item

An exceptionally rare and unusual large wooden brazier hook (jizaikagi), dating to the Edo–Meiji period (19th century). Traditionally used in the homes of wealthy farmers, these sculptural hooks were suspended above the hearth (irori) to support kettles or pots over an open flame. This particular example is expertly carved from a single block of keyaki wood (Japanese zelkova), one of the most prized hardwoods in Japan, renowned for its strength and striking grain. Over time, the surface has acquired a beautiful deep patina from decades of smoke and use, enhancing its sculptural presence. The organic shape and richly textured surface make this piece not only a functional historical object but also a captivating sculptural work that would sit beautifully in both rustic and minimalist interiors. • Origin: Japan • Period: Edo–Meiji era, 19th century • Material: Solid keyaki (zelkova) wood • Dimensions: Height: 63 cm (24.4 in), Width: 33 / 22 cm (13 / 8.6 in) • Weight: 5.462 kg (12 lb) • Condition: Good antique condition with surface patination and minor abrasions consistent with age and use ⸻ Shipping & Customs International buyers – please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost.
