About the Item

Statuette of Buddha in patinated bronze, represented in walking posture, holding an alms bowl in the right hand and the left hand raised, index finger and thumb together. This position of the hand is the Gesture of argumentation, of the explanation of the Law vitarka-mudrā, of the doctrine. In the vitarka mudrā, the tips of the thumb and index finger touch and form a circle: This mudrā symbolizes the teaching phase in the life of Buddha and the circle represents an endless flow of energy. Ayutthaya In the style of Sukhotaï productions. The Buddha walks on a bronze base. Magnificent and delicate bronze work. Thailand, 19th century The collector André Vayson de Pardenne (1888-1939), French archaeologist and prehistorian, owned a similar one. The Sukhothai Empire remains a pivotal chapter in the history of Southeast Asia. He is celebrated for his remarkable artistic achievements that still captivate observers today.
