Unusual and Very Rare Edo Period Brazier Hook in Keyaki Wood, 19th Century

About the Item

A remarkable and rare find from the Edo–Meiji transition period, this large wooden brazier hook (jizaikagi) was traditionally used in wealthy farmhouse interiors, suspended from the ceiling above an irori—Japan’s traditional sunken hearth. Sculpted from a solid piece of keyaki (Japanese zelkova), a highly prized hardwood known for its strength, warmth, and exquisite grain, this piece reflects both utility and artistry. The hook exhibits an organically aged surface with a rich natural patina developed over decades of exposure to hearth smoke and daily use. Its sculptural form and substantial weight suggest it came from a distinguished rural residence. These hooks served both as a functional tool for adjusting kettles and pots over the fire and as a symbol of hospitality, stability, and prosperity. Today, this rare example is a statement piece for collectors of Japanese folk furnishings, rustic design, or wabi-sabi interiors.
