About the Item
A simple and elegant Japanese sea chest, funa tansu, crafted of keyaki wood with iron fittings, mounted on a modern iron stand, Meiji Period, dated 1882, Japan.
This Japanese sea chest, or captain's chest, known as a funa tansu, features an exterior of stained keyaki (Japanese elm) wood with heavy iron mounts. Two substantial iron handles adorn the chest for easy carrying and transport - one to the front of the chest, the other to the top. The single door with two locks, and reinforced with iron straps. The corners all reinforced with further iron mounts.
The door set on three hinges, opening to reveal a set of three drawers of graduated size, all with substantial iron handles. Two drawers with round lock plates.
The back of the chest with an inscription, dated the eight month of the 15th year of Meiji (1882).
The sea chest is raised on a modern iron base.
Funa tansu were widely used on board merchant ships during the Edo and Meiji periods. Used as strong boxes to store money, paperwork, and other valuables, these compact and elegant chests were often constructed of precious hardwood and mounted with elaborate iron fittings, adding durability and strength while also serving as a signifier of status and wealth.

A large and remarkable Japanese lacquer and marquetry decorated table or hanging cabinet, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The cabinet of square form surmounted by an arched top with upturned scroll ends. Eight drawers of various shapes and sizes adorn the exterior of the cabinet. Doors on either side open to reveal interiors fitted with cubby holes over a single drawer.
The front of the cabinet is decorated with scattered geometric marquetry patterns of various design utilizing contrasting woods, including hardwood and burl, all in the yosegi zaiku technique.
The sides and top of the cabinet of black lacquer with maki-e lacquer painted designs of flowers and grasses. The back of plain black lacquer with two hoops for hanging.
The interior of the cabinet doors and the interior drawers decorated in the wakasa lacquer technique, with gold rhomboid accents against a polished black lacquer ground.
Overall a striking accent piece and nice example of Japanese yosegi...
