About the Item

A simple and elegant Japanese sea chest, funa tansu, crafted of keyaki wood with iron fittings, mounted on a modern iron stand, Meiji Period, dated 1882, Japan. This Japanese sea chest, or captain's chest, known as a funa tansu, features an exterior of stained keyaki (Japanese elm) wood with heavy iron mounts. Two substantial iron handles adorn the chest for easy carrying and transport - one to the front of the chest, the other to the top. The single door with two locks, and reinforced with iron straps. The corners all reinforced with further iron mounts. The door set on three hinges, opening to reveal a set of three drawers of graduated size, all with substantial iron handles. Two drawers with round lock plates. The back of the chest with an inscription, dated the eight month of the 15th year of Meiji (1882). The sea chest is raised on a modern iron base. Funa tansu were widely used on board merchant ships during the Edo and Meiji periods. Used as strong boxes to store money, paperwork, and other valuables, these compact and elegant chests were often constructed of precious hardwood and mounted with elaborate iron fittings, adding durability and strength while also serving as a signifier of status and wealth.
