About the Item
A rare and architecturally elegant set of six dining chairs by Danish designer Helge Vestergaard Jensen, crafted in the 1950s by master cabinetmaker Peder Pedersen. These chairs exemplify the understated precision and sculptural purity that defined Jensen’s best work — a body of design that, while lesser known, confidently stands alongside the greats of Danish modernism.
Trained under Kaare Klint and influenced by the principles of functional architecture, Jensen brought a meticulous, almost cerebral approach to furniture design. His works — especially those made in collaboration with Peder Pedersen — are exceptionally scarce and collected by those who seek out the finest examples of mid-century craftsmanship.
This set, with its solid teak frames, slender tapering legs, and ergonomically sculpted backs, recalls the refinement found in the works of Finn Juhl and Niels Vodder, and the masterful joinery associated with Hans Wegner and cabinetmaker Johannes Hansen. Though Jensen’s name may not yet carry the same international recognition, his uncompromising design language is no less important — quiet, intentional, and exquisitely executed.
The original black leather remains intact but heavily distressed, with one chair bearing a major tear to the backrest and others showing deep patina, wear, and cracking. The set is offered as-found, ideal for a thoughtful restoration or for collectors who value the honesty of age and authenticity.
