About the Item
Antique Deco Round Lacquer Box. Antique Chinese Round Lacquer Box used for special delicate sweets and or holding special jewelry. Art Deco period in Shanghai, 1920-40. Constructed wood with gesso and lacquers. The inside has a star shaped center with six side compartments. Lacquered colors of red, brown, black, and yellow coat the interior with black and red lacquers on the exterior. In good condition, hand polished lacquer over time. The opening of trade in the 1920s, brought many Western influences to Shanghai. Shanghai was even called the “cosmopolitan Paris of the East.” European-style architecture and jazz became popular in the bustling city of Shanghai. Aesthetic shifted from the elaborate decoration of the fallen Qing Dynasty. Design taking ques from the French design movement "Art Deco", became redefined by the East working well with Chinese Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.
This lacquerware container is true example of the shift in design having a modernist design with rimmed details to the base and clean lines of the circular form and deco influenced interior.

A lacquered cylindrical body of woven turned Bamboo decorated by incised lacquer overall with Chu-pan variant motif and traditional Folk Art characters.
