About the Item
A bold and wild vintage Japanese lacquer tea caddy, Tsugaru nuri natsume, Heisei Era, circa 1990's, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.
The striking tea caddy, known as a natsume, of typical form and crafted of Tsugaru nuri lacquer in the kara nuri style with a colorful speckled pattern. A golden brown lacquer serves at the background for irregular splashes of black, green, red, and gold lacquer.

Tsugaru nuri is a recognized traditional lacquer craft produced in Aomori Prefecture. Kara nuri is the most popular style or Tsugaru nuri. The process is intricate and time consuming, involving several layers of colored lacquer which are then dried and polished.
The natsume is an important part of chado, Japanese tea ceremonies. The natsume is used to hold matcha (green) tea powder.
