About the Item
A fine and elegant Japanese gilt maki-e lacquer box for incense accessories, kobako, late Edo period, mid 19th century, Japan.
The fantastic small box of rectangular form, with a slightly domed lid and silver rims. The box is decorated all over in a sumptuous gilt lacquer with a design of a pair of sparrows flying amongst towering bamboo, a popular motif known as Take ni Suzume. The sparrows symbolize hope of the returning spring, overcoming the hardship of winter, while the tall bamboo symbolizes strength and resilience.
The cover of slightly domed shape with beveled sides. The design of sparrows and bamboo executed in relief in the taka-maki-e technique. The wings of the birds further decorated with copper and silver maki-e lacquer that contrasts nicely against the rich gold lacquer ground. The bamboo design extends over the edge of the top on three sides, continuing further down to the body on one side.
The interior and undersides of the lid and box decorated in a rich and dense nashiji.
