About the Item

This is a good papier mâché, circular, black lacquered tray, hand enameled and gilded, made in Japan during the 19th century, Meiji period. This circular tray is very decorative, with a finely hand painted scenes of four people in an outdoor fenced verandah setting, with bushes, flowers, birds and mountains in the background. The hand painting is well done, with fine detailed gilt work and white enamel to the heads and hands of the people, all set against a black base color with a lacquered finish. The base shows wear consistent with its use and age. This is a very decorative, finely hand painted piece for decoration or use as required.
