Miniature hokkai bako or kaioke, doll furniture replica of a traditional box

About the Item

Small hokkai bako or kaioke seashells game box, of circular form with its four feet, its bronzes and cordon, decorated with a motive of flowers of gold lacquer on a black lacquer background. Presumably realized as part of a dollhouse and its set of traditional furniture. Most of the time these boxes are octagonal but sometimes it also can be round, designed to hold the seashells used in the game kai awase (image association). These boxes were used to contain two sets of one hundred and eighty seashells each adorned with a different painted scene.
