A baluster vase with a flared neck, in painted and lacquered papier-mâché, decorated in polychrome and gold with a complex and varied floral design.

Modern base
The papier-mâché technique was first adopted in Kashmir in the 14th century by Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a Sufi mystic, who came to Kashmir during the late 14th century along with his followers, many of whom were craftsmen. These craftsmen used hand-made paper pulp from Iran.

An outstanding example of a Mid-19th Century Kashmiri hand painted holy scripture stand. A similar example can be found in Copenhagen at the David Collection of fine Islamic Arts. This fine piece of art is called a “Kursi”, made from wood and hand painted. Some of the most beautiful Kashmiri detail we have seen is displayed on ths piece, covered in floral design, the upper section is detailed with scripture from the holy Quran.
