Pair of Japanese Hibachi with Inlaid Bamboo Motif
About the Item
A beautifully matched pair of Japanese hibachi (traditional fire bowls) from the Meiji period (1868–1912), showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and refined aesthetics. Each vessel is carved from richly grained hardwood, possibly zelkova or keyaki, and elegantly adorned with an intricate inlay of bamboo stalks and leaves rendered in colored lacquer, metal, and raden (mother-of-pearl).
The glowing natural tones of the wood contrast gracefully with the shimmering inlays, creating a serene and harmonious composition that celebrates nature—a core theme in Japanese decorative arts. The bamboo motif symbolizes strength, resilience, and longevity, making this pair especially meaningful as a decorative or symbolic addition to an interior.
Traditionally used as portable charcoal braziers, hibachi such as these were often repurposed in modern interiors as flower vessels, planters, or as elegant sculptural objects. This particular set is preserved in excellent antique condition, with warm patina and minimal signs of age. The original tomobako (wooden storage box) bearing calligraphy is included, further enhancing their value and provenance.
