An extremely rare and unusual 18th century red lacquer presentation box, intricately gilt-decorated with immortals, auspicious symbols and poetry. Canton, Qing dynasty, circa 1760. Why we like it The exquisite decoration of this lacquer box is simply superb, which, combined with its extremely rare and unusual octagonal lantern-shape, makes it a true collector's dream. Context Chinese lacquerware made for domestic market is extremely rare and particularly sought after. Usually commissioned by wealthy and influential patrons, often as precious gifts for special occasions, such pieces stand out for their high quality and artistic virtuosity.  Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe.
