18th Century Indian "Bidri Ware" Hookah Base

About the Item

18th Century Indian "Bidri Ware" Hookah Base. Bidri is a metalworking technique unique to India, which involves inlaying fine geometric and floral patterns in silver, brass, or gold into artifacts made of high-zinc alloy. It is thought to have originated in the Deccani city of Bidar. Mughal, circa 1750. A rare and intracately detailed 18th-century Bidri Ware hookah base, crafted in India during the Mughal period, circa 1750. This striking vessel exemplifies the opulence and refinement of Mughal metalwork, featuring a boldly sculpted silhouette adorned with exquisite repousse and engraved ornamentation. The form is distinguished by a dramatically arched spout shaped as a stylized fish or serpent, a finely cast handle with incised detailing, and a domed lid crowned by a pointed finial, all connected by a hand-wrought chain. The surface is richly decorated with scrolling arabesques, scaled fish motifs, and finely tooled foliate patterns. It's set with turquoise cabochon eyes, offering a vivid contrast against the warm patina of the copper alloy body. The decoration reflects traditional symbolism, where serpentine and aquatic forms often signify protection, abundance, and transformation. The elaborate surface work, combined with the sculptural silhouette, places this object among the more distinctive examples of Mughal hookah design. Originally created as a functional hookah base, this piece now stands as a highly collectible decorative object, embodying the elegance and craftsmanship of 18th-century Indian Bidri ware.
