About the Item
A fine antique 19th century Russian Imperial 840 grade silver gilt tray by Adolf Sper, St. Petersburg, 1845.
Sper was a silversmith & jeweler to the Russian Imperial family, this solid silver tray is in the Rococo Revival style and has a wavy ribbed border with floral spandrels in relief to each corner.
The tray is stamped with the Assayer's initials "A.T" for Dimitri Tverskoy and the date "1845", it is also stamped "A.Sper" and "84" with the city mark for St. Petersburg. The tray is in excellent condition and is ready to grace your space.
Silver weight 12.5 Oz (31 grams)
Adolf Sper was a highly skilled Finnish jeweler and silversmith working in Russia in the 1840s, he made silver for many members of the Imperial Russian family & other important Russian dignitaries. Born in the Finnish municipality of Kirkkonummi near Helsinki (1799). In 1816 He moved to St Petersburg where he worked as an apprentice, journeyman in 1821 and master in 1829. Married Anna Charlotta Aurin (1830). Opened a workshop on the corner of Povarskoi Lane and Stremyannaya Street in St Petersburg, where he had many apprentices and made silverware in the Biedermeier & Second Rococo styles (1830s–40s). Worked in his wife’s hometown of Vaasa (renamed Nikolaistad/Nikolainkaupunki in 1855) on the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland (1850s). Died in Nikolainkaupunki (1857).
