About the Item

A Japanese silver wire and enamel vase. The urn shaped vase is enameled with a polychrome design representing cranes in a pond landscape with blossoming flowers made in the Cloisonne technique. The base and the neck are adorned with foliage, and floral patterns made in the Cloisonne technique. Circa: 19th century. Dimensions: Height is 6 in. All measurements are approximate. ConditionOverall good vintage condition. Signs of age and wear. Refer to photos.

An antique Japanese, Meiji era, enamel over copper plate or charger attributed to Hayashi Kodenji, Japanese, 1831 to 1915. Circa 1890. The plate has an octagonal form. The interior of the plate is enameled with a polychrome image of cranes on the turquoise ground made in the Cloisonne technique. The backside is decorated with a foliate scroll ornament on the turquoise ground made in the same technique. Hayashi Kodenji was a pivotal figure in the history of Cloisonne enamel manufacturer. He was instrumental in the formation and leadership of the Shippo cho enamellers guild, and it is probable that he worked for the Nagoya-based Shippo Kaisha.
