Chinese Cloisonne Phoenix Head Tea or Wine Pot, Mid 20th Century, China
About the Item
A delightful and unusual Chinese cloisonne enamel copper wine or tea pot in the form of a phoenix, late Republic Period, or post Republic, mid 20th century, China.
The wine pot in the form of a tea pot with a phoenix head spout, reminiscent of the phoenix headed ewers of the Tang and Song Dynasties. The body of the pot is of flattened circular moon flask form, with a gilt metal handle and a circular cover topped by a gilt metal standing phoenix.
The body of the wine pot is decorated in wonderful and colorful cloisonne enamels against a turquoise blue ground. The spout modeled as the head of the phoenix, with beautiful detailing to the neck feathers in pink, red, yellow, turquoise and green enamels against a deep blue enamel ground. A crown of gilt metal feathers surrounds the head.
The upper half the pot features the slightly raised body of the phoenix, its wings outspread with feathers trailing behind. The body with an overlapping fish scale pattern of contrasting cobalt blue and turquoise. The scrolled gilt handle invoking the long and gracious tail of the phoenix.
The lower half of the pot decorated with stylized lotus blossom and scrolling acanthus. A geometric band decorates the raised foot.
Phoenix headed ewers and vessels have a long history in China, appearing in the early 7th century during the Tang Dynasty. The form seemingly imported from Central and Western Asia along the Silk Road, and based on Sogdian prototypes.
