About the Item

An amazing and rare Chinese silver Nine Phoenix Coronet or Crown, Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644), late 16th to early 17th century, China. A delicate and exquisite Chinese Ming Dynasty silver "Nine Phoenix Coronet". The coronet, or crown, features a headband crafted as a band of scrolling clouds and was originally treated with a gold wash. Separately cast silver phoenixes with outstretched wings and a large tail plume are attached to the headband. Each phoenix holds a large chime suspended from a delicate chain held in its beak. Each large chime with a further set of nine chimes, arranged in groups of three, joined by separate hanging chains. This type of headdress was reserved only for the highest ranking concubines of imperial court, with the number of phoenixes (nine being the maximum) designating their rank - the more phoenixes on the crown, the higher her rank. Exhibited at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art, Chicago, IL, 2017 - 2019.

Located in Austin, TX
A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters. The two lotus blossoms to either side of Guanyin would originally have supported figures of the acolytes...
