About the Item

A fine late Qing or early Republic Period Chinese silver repoussé box featuring a scene possibly from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, very early 20th century, China. The rectangular box with a hinged lid and decorated all over in high and low relief repoussé. The top of the box features a scene most likely from the Chinese historical saga of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), a dramatized chronicle of the unification of China in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The scene depicted here is most likely that of Liu Bei meeting Zhuge Liang, attempting to recruit him to his campaign. The sides of the box feature a parade of soldiers with various weapons. The box is unmarked, which, according to the eminent Chinese Silver scholar Adrien Von Ferscht, "is not unusual for Qing Dynasty and Chinese Republic Era silver wares".
