About the Item

This is a handmade Ewer / Pitcher made from tinned copper and dating to the early 19th Century. It is of Islamic influence made in the Middle East, probably Turkey. This piece is all hand made from non-ferrous metals, mainly copper and some brass. The copper has been tinned. The piece is very stable with a wide circular base which tapers up to the mid section where it narrows to a tall neck, having a fitted hinged lid. The ewer has a long loop handle and a curved pouring spout. The base shows signs of being heated over a stove so it could have been used as a coffee pot.

This jug is hand potted in a very rare shape with a loop handle and a pouring spout to the rim. The pattern is hand painted in the Rose Posies pattern all against a Mazarine blue ground colour with hand gilded twirls, as illustrated on page 32 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club.
