About the Item
A Fine Japanese Cloisonné-Enamel Vase/Jar with Cover Attributed to the Ando Company,
Meiji to Taishō period, early 20th century
Of baluster form with a domed cover surmounted by a knop finial, finely worked in silver wire and coloured enamels on a deep midnight-blue ground. The body decorated with a panoramic view of a traditional Japanese castle compound, possibly inspired by Nagoya-jo, its angular architecture depicted with remarkable precision in soft grey and ivory enamels. The stone ramparts are constructed from tightly laid hexagonal cells, bordered below by stylised floral sprays of chrysanthemums and daisies in red, yellow, and white, set against a pale blue foreground suggestive of water. Tall pines rise behind the castle walls, offering depth and serenity to the landscape.
The domed cover inset with a silvered-metal collar and surmounted by an enamelled knop accented with a fine silver ring. Both the interior of the lid and the recessed base are silvered with traces of original gold gilt remaining, a characteristic feature of higher-quality studio work.

A Fine Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase with Irises. Meiji period
Attributed to a Nagoya workshop, bearing the ‘three peaches’ mark
Meiji period.
A finely worked Japanese cloisonné enamel vase of elegant baluster form, with a flared mouth and gilt metal mounts. The pale turquoise ground is decorated in the yūsen (wired) cloisonné technique with a vibrant and naturalistic arrangement of flowering irises, bluebells, and other seasonal flora. The composition includes richly shaded purple and cream iris blossoms rising among finely tapering green leaves and delicate undergrowth, capturing the naturalistic sensibility associated with the Meiji era.
Executed with exceptional precision, the enamel work demonstrates advanced shading techniques and subtle colour gradations, particularly in the floral petals. The fine silver wires, precise outlining, and transparent layering of enamels suggest a skilled hand from the Nagoya school.
The underside is finished in gilt metal and bears the distinctive “three peaches” mark, a stylised emblem associated with a high-quality but anonymous Nagoya workshop active in the early 20th century. This mark is found on other refined vases sometimes compared in style to the work of Hayashi Kodenji or Kumeno Teitarō...
