A Fine Japanese Cloisonné Vase with Butterfly and Floral Panels
Japan, Meiji Period (c. 1880–1900)
A Fine Japanese cloisonné enamel vase of an elegant lobed baluster shape with a waisted neck and flared rim features a soft lavender-blue ground with intricate polychrome decoration throughout. Around the shoulder, a band of hexagonal floral reserves — each filled with finely wired chrysanthemum and peony blooms — creates a vibrant, jewel-like effect.
The main body is adorned with large vertical cartouches containing stylised florals and beautifully enamelled butterflies, a traditional symbol of joy and transformation in Japanese culture. The precision and colour layering of the butterflies suggest the hand of a skilled artisan from a high-quality Kyoto or Nagoya workshop.
The neck is equally refined, with pendant tassel motifs and gilt scrollwork set against a pale celadon enamel, crowned by a flared rim with stylised wave borders. Both rim and foot are finished with gilt metal mounts, and the lobed shaping of the body adds a tactile, sculptural elegance.
Unsigned, but attributable by quality and style to the Kyoto/Nagoya school of cloisonné production. A beautifully balanced decorative piece and an excellent collector’s item — rare to find in such condition and colour harmony.
Condition: In good condition commensurate with age. No damage or restoration observed.
