About the Item
A Fine Pair of Cloisonné-Enamel Vases
Attributed to Honda Yasaburo
Each of ovoid form with a short cylindrical neck, set on a recessed foot, finely worked in coloured enamels and silver wire with circular roundels enclosing butterflies, birds, and flowering sprays of wisteria, prunus, and chrysanthemum, all reserved on a copper-red ground flecked with fine gold. The shoulders enamelled in translucent amber over scattered gold stones , creating a glittering surface and decorated with a profusion of butterflies in flight. The neck and foot rims applied with gilt-metal mounts and bordered with bands of stylised floral scrollwork.
A decorative and refined pair, notable for the uncommon copper red enamel ground, the delicate silver wirework, and the shimmering sunago shoulders—hallmarks of high-quality Kyoto cloisonné of the late Meiji period.
