About the Item

A wonderfully naturalistic large Japanese Meiji period mixed metal okimono (ornamental sculpture) of a pair of oriental turtle doves perched on a gnarled tree trunk, signed Seifu, late 19th century, Japan. The detachable pigeons masterfully cast with a life-like naturalism. Their wings inlaid with silver and copper, the male flecked with gold. Their eyes with silver inlaid pupils, their beaks gilded. The birds seemingly caught as if the viewer has just come upon them. The slightly larger bird (presumably the male), perched directly upon the stump, turns its head to face the viewer. The slightly smaller bird (presumably the female) stands amongst the roots at ground level, head slightly ducked. Each bird signed "Seifu" to the underside. The stump features new growth, with clusters of broad leaves grow amongst the trunk and roots of the felled tree. The leaves portrayed in a natural state, with some leaves displaying insect damage. A single, graceful tendril rising hesitantly against the trunk.
