About the Item
A Large Japanese Cloisonné-Enamel Vase
Meiji era (1868–1912)
Of tall, elegant baluster form with flared neck, finely worked in polychrome enamels and silver wire on a soft pale blue ground, the body decorated with a large, sinuous dragon writhing among stylised red flames, its scaly body meticulously detailed in shades of turquoise, pink and white. The reverse with a powerful hawk in full flight, rendered in subtle gradations of brown, grey and black enamel, its fierce expression and finely detailed plumage contrasting with the lighter ground. The neck and foot rims mounted in gilt metal and bordered with formal bands of stylised floral scrollwork. The interior and base enamelled turquoise.
Height: 34 cm
In good Condition commensurate with age, a minute nick below the hawk, otherwise in very good condition with no further damage or restoration observed. Refer to photos.
