Large Qing Dynasty Chinese Archaistic Gold Splashed Bronze Hu Vase

$18,000

About

A large and impressive Chinese bronze archaistic hu vessel, Qing dynasty, 19th century, China. Of fine proportions and robustly cast with bands of taotie masks on leiwen diaper ground to the upper body and neck and a band of repeating leiwen ground cicada wings with taotie masks to the lower body. A well cast pair of taotie mask handles with protruding spiral horns and holding loose roped ring handles adorn the shoulders. A pair of phoenixes in flight complete the decoration to the shoulders. The bronze has been finished with a lacquer applied patina, with areas of parcel gilding, sometimes called "gold splash". A three line inscription in archaic seal script, reading in part "zizi sunsun yong bao yong" (to be used and treasured by sons and grandsons), graces the underside.
