A Magnificent Japanese Cloisonné Enamel Vase by Ando Jubei
Taisho Era-Early 20th Century
Of elegant ovoid form with a short waisted neck and everted rim, worked in polychrome enamels and silver wire of the finest quality, the body decorated with a brilliantly plumed phoenix in mid-flight, its wings and tail feathers rendered in rich tones of emerald, turquoise, aubergine, and copper red, all reserved against a radiant canary-yellow ground. The neck and foot encircled with scrolling karakusa motifs in black enamel, the rims mounted in patinated copper.
The underside with the impressed mark of Ando Jubei -the celebrated Nagoya cloisonné master and official purveyor to the Imperial Household.
This exceptional work demonstrates Ando Jubei’s consummate skill during the late Meiji period, uniting bold design with flawless execution on a striking yellow ground—a palette associated with rarity and distinction.
Size: H-22 cm, W-12 cm, diameter to the bottom 8 cm.
