About the Item

Meiji Masterpiece attributed to Ando Jubei: A Maroon Cloisonné Vase with Dragons & Phoenix, circa 1895 This monumental Meiji period Japanese cloisonné vase, attributed to the esteemed Ando Jubei workshop, stands as a quintessential example of the era's artistic sophistication. With its grand scale and striking design, this vase epitomizes the excellence of Meiji cloisonné craftsmanship. The vase features a rich maroon enamel base that provides a dramatic backdrop for its intricate patterns. The neck is adorned with powerful, serpentine dragons swirling through ethereal clouds, creating a dynamic sense of movement. Below, a band of medallions showcases Shishi foo dogs, symbols of protection, interlaced with elegant lotus flowers representing purity and enlightenment. Another geometric band adds a touch of symmetry and balance to the overall composition. The central portion of the vase is particularly captivating, where stunning green goldstone enamel medallions alternate with majestic phoenix birds, emblematic of rebirth and immortality, and Paulownia flowers associated with Japanese imperial imagery. The peach-colored enamel background with floating dragons enhances the depth and contrast of the design. The interior and bottom of the vase are beautifully finished with a fantastic lime green counter-enamel, adding a vibrant and unexpected touch that complements the rich maroon exterior. This exceptional piece is not only a remarkable decorative object but also a testament to the highest level of cloisonné artistry, making it a valuable addition to any prestigious collection or exhibition. 20" high x 18" diameter Overall very good condition....minor flake to one medallion.
