About the Item

A fine antique 20th century Japanese Amita Damascene Steel Box. Made of damascened steel inlaid with gold & silver. The lid of the box has gilt depictions of bamboo plants, while the sides of the boxes have similar depictions of river plants and birds. The interior of the box is fully gilt, and the lid’s interior is decorated with an embossed depiction of a Japanese doll of a girl in kimono amongst branches, leaves, and flowers. Marked to the bottom of the box for ‘W.E. Knox’ and with a Shimazu Mon or 'cross in circle' mark. Simply a great example of Japanese metalwork! Date: 20th Century Overall condition: It is in overall, good, as-pictured used estate condition with some fine and light surface scratches and other signs of light wear consistent with age. Marks or Signature: Marked to the bottom of the box for ‘W.E. Knox’ and with a cross inside a circle mark. Measurements: Width ca. 4 1/2 in. Height ca. 1 3/4 in. Depth ca. 2 7/8 in. An early Japanese lacquer Maki-e decorated kobako (small storage box) circa 18th century (Edo period). Based on its form and size, this kobako was possibly used as a Chabako to store the accoutrements for chado (tea ceremony). The lidded box is of rectangular form with bevel design on all edge that softens the appearance. The entire surface was densely covered with a background of nashiji. Tebako box with three compartments in golden and nashi-ji lacquer, decorated with golden, red, and kirigane lacquer, golden persimmon tree leaves, among rocks. The compartments are of increasing size from the top. The decoration is in continuity. Persimmon has been cultivated in southern China for more than 2500 years and is believed to have been introduced to Japan in the 8th century.
