About the Item
A fine Syrian brass Mamluk revival hand crafted brass charger or tray inlaid with silver and copper and dating from the early to mid-20th century.
The Mamluk revival was a cultural movement during which much of the Middle East sought to preserve and celebrate the artistic legacy of the Mamluk Sultanate, a period renowned for its sophisticated craftsmanship, particularly in metalwork. This revival, emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflected a deep respect for the opulence and intricacy of medieval Islamic art.
This charger is a striking example of this revivalist spirit. It is crafted from brass and richly inlaid with silver and copper, the piece stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Mamluk design principles. Its style while more reserved sees the surface formally decorated with copper outlines on a patterned brass ground and applied with stylised silver patterning and Islamic script styled inlay. The charger is not marked.
