About the Item

A Japanese color woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) entitled "Carp and Tortoises". Relatively scarce on the market, the work was created in 1940 by the artist and printed under his personal supervision (as marked by the Jizuri mark on the left margin). The work depicts an idyllic scene around a pond in Kyoto where visitors in kimonos looking out for the carps and tortoises. The weeping willows frame a temple pagoda suggesting the summer season. Signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin as shown; In plate artist's Japanese "Hiroshi" signature and red ink seal in the lower left corner; Jizuri mark and date Showa 15th year as well as title in Japanese on the left. Sight: 15" H x 10.25" W This is an original print with good impression. It is presented matted in a nice carved gilt wood frame, but it has been examined out of the frame as shown in the pictures. A similar print with jizuri mark is in the collection of National Musuem of Asian Art Smithsonian S2000.51. Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950) was considered one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga woodblock print style in the 20th century. Widely celebrated for his landscape work, not only sceneries in Japan but also around the world from his extensive travelling. Many exotic and iconic places in India, Europe and North America found their way in his work but presented in a traditional Japanese style.
