About the Item
A beautifully composed and colored woodblock print by famed Japanese shin-hanga artist/printmaker Ito Shunsui (1898-1972) titled "Garden in Early Summer (Shoka no Niwa)" though it is sometimes referred to as Early Summer Garden. The print features a Bijin-ga (a beautiful woman) wearing a butterfly patterned kimono sitting in a luxurious green garden accentuated by blossoming red and white azaleas on an early summer day.
The piece is a double Oban limited edition (of which this is number 164 of 300) woodblock print in colors published by the Momose Print Company of Tokyo (Shinsui did some designs for Momose in the 1960s separate from the images he created for Watanabe Shozaburo ). It is based on an earlier painting by the artist.
A copy of this work can be found in the Auckland Museum, New Zealand.
Shinsui's works can be found in numerous collections and museums worldwide including:

View AllMizuno Toshikata Japanese Woodblock Print First Call of the Warbler, 36 Beauties
Located in Studio City, CA
An absolutely gorgeous and relatively rare original woodblock print by Japanese artist/printmaker Mizuno Toshikata titled "First Call of the Warbler" from his series Thirty-Six Selected Beauties (“Sanju Rokka Sen”) which he created to illustrate the daily activities of various Japanese women from different time periods and walks of life. This work features a geisha practicing the shamisen under the bright light of a full moon as the night's first warbler songbird joins her on a cherry tree branch just outside her window. It is a quite beautiful and serene scene and one of Toshikata most coveted images.
This work was created circa 1892 during the Mejia period (1868-1912). It is signed and sealed by the artist with the image.
Mizuno Toshikata was born on March 6, 1866 as Mizuno Kumejiro in Tokyo. When he was 13 years old, his father sent him to the printmaking school of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Later Toshikata Mizuno...
