About the Item

Noguchi Yonejiro was an English poet, novelist, and critic from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods. He was the father of Isamu Noguchi. He is said to have introduced Japanese culture to the world, and woodblock prints were one of them, so he was probably chosen for the purpose of selling them overseas. Watanabe Mokuhan produced woodblock prints as a publisher in the early 20th century, and sold ukiyo-e woodblock prints as an ukiyo-e dealer. A rare piece that bears the "Watanabe" seal, which is proof that it was made by Watanabe, as well as the "Yone Noguchi" seal. *Watanabe woodblock prints are still made today, but modern ones use a different seal, so this piece is old. Noguchi also seemed to be very particular about his work, and it is believed that he was also involved in the production of the piece with this seal. Some of the pieces have a textured surface (a technique called "空刷り") This is a work from that time that was reproduced under the supervision of Yone Noguchi, featuring works by very famous Edo period artists "Torii Kiyonaga," "Kitagawa Utamaro," and "Toshusai Sharaku." It is believed to be part of a series, but it is sold as a set of three. * The product will be shipped rolled up. * Please note that there may be sunburn, stains, and deterioration over time.
