About the Item

A wonderfully designed and richly colored oban-sized original woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. This print is titled "The Chionin (Chion-in) Temple In Kyoto" and comes from Hasui's series Nihon fukeishu II Kansaihen (Collected Views of Japan II, Kansai Edition.) The work was published in 1933 and it depicts a darkened interior view of the the temple looking out towards the bright outside world of blue sky and tall trees. In the background, heavy temple doors frame a woman and child. The contrast between the darkness and light is masterful. It is a beautifully composed serene moment. The work is hand signed in pencil in English by Hasui -extremely rare as we have only seen one other example of this - and is dated in Japanese hachinen hachigatsu saku (Work of August, Showa 8 [1933]) in the lower margin and signed Hasui and sealed Kawase in the lower right corner. The print was published by Watanabe Shozaburo, with a 6mm round Watanabe seal at the bottom left corner. A coveted and again rare hand signed image by Hasui. Would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese or Asian art/ print collection or collectors of Hasui's work or an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting. Hasui's work can be found in numerous prominent collections/museums including: Los Angeles County Museum of Art Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Harvard Art Museums Museum of New Zealand Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Matted and framed and ready to display. Framed dimensions: 22.75" high, 17" wide, .5" deep. Viewable image: 15" x 10" wide.

The print is in excellent vintage condition with a good color, impression and state and no discernable issues. The frame has light natural organic wear consistent with age and use (please see photos). A special and engaging work overall.
