Mizuno Toshikata Japanese Woodblock Print First Call of the Warbler, 36 Beauties

About the Item

An absolutely gorgeous and relatively rare original woodblock print by Japanese artist/printmaker Mizuno Toshikata titled "First Call of the Warbler" from his series Thirty-Six Selected Beauties (“Sanju Rokka Sen”) which he created to illustrate the daily activities of various Japanese women from different time periods and walks of life. This work features a geisha practicing the shamisen under the bright light of a full moon as the night's first warbler songbird joins her on a cherry tree branch just outside her window. It is a quite beautiful and serene scene and one of Toshikata most coveted images. This work was created circa 1892 during the Mejia period (1868-1912). It is signed and sealed by the artist with the image. Mizuno Toshikata was born on March 6, 1866 as Mizuno Kumejiro in Tokyo. When he was 13 years old, his father sent him to the printmaking school of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Later Toshikata Mizuno was instructed in the traditional art of Japanese painting by Shibata Hoshu and Watanabe Seitei. He would become most well know for his prints of birds, beasts, plants and flowers, women (Geisha) and children and would published several series of bijin (美人 beautiful women) prints. Would be a great addition to any Japanese or Asian art/print collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent artwork in about any setting.
