19the Century Stone Shanxi Lion

About the Item

An antique stone lion with a charming expression from Shanxi province, China, estimated to be 150–200 years old. Unlike traditional guardian lions placed in pairs at entrances, this is a single desk lion, known in Chinese as an 案头狮 (àn tóu shī). These figures were kept on a scholar’s desk to symbolize stability in one’s career, household affairs, and social standing—meant to help you hold your ground and secure your position. Carved from stone and weighing 1.1 kg, the lion features a smooth, tactile surface developed through age and handling. A distinctive and meaningful object, perfect for collectors of scholar’s items or those drawn to pieces rich in cultural symbolism.
