About the Item

Antique Chinese Tea Caddy. Late 19th century early 20th century Elm Wood carved gilt red lacquered tea caddy. In very good condition a beautiful example. Tea caddies of this larger size where mostly used for large gatherings. Holding a large tea pot of hot tea with the spout protruding from the opening center top front. A Tea Caddy this size would be heavy once filled with a full teapot inside. A Tea Caddy of this nature would be to present the Tea keeping the tea warm. The tea pot’s spout comes out the front opening for pouring. The carving and design would symbolize region and status. This particular Caddy is highly carved with Fu symbol (Blessing of Good Fortune) to the the center of the handle. A Crane under fruiting tree symbolizing longevity, immortality and wisdom on the front. Pear Fruits representing immortality and prosperity are carved just below the handles on each side. The carving is deep into the wood exhibiting depth to the workmanship. A very Auspicious Tea Caddy. This Tea Caddy appears to be from Fujian. The construction is very well done. The Handle has a sliding bar lock mechanism that hold the top down secure in good working order. In very good condition. Original condition lightly hand polished with furniture oil.
