About the Item
A very fine Japanese bronze Suiban (planter) of bellied oval form, richly decorated overall with hand enamelled and 'shibuichi' & 'shakudo' motifs, depicting geometric designs, pine trees, exotic beasts, priestly & scholarly figures, mounted at both ends with organic-inspired open handles with fruiting vines. Raised overall on four short supports, and resting atop its original and similarly decorated ‘Daiza’ (stand), both exhibiting an exceptionally fine reddish-brown patina overall. Dimensions, 5” high (5.75” high on stand) x 13” wide x 7.75” deep. Combined weight, 10.3 lbs.
Suiban are traditional Japanese planters made of wood or ceramic but also occasionally in bronze, which are used to display Ikebana & Bonsai arrangements, and in some instances, albeit rarely – they sometimes have an independent & conforming ‘Daiza’ (stand).
Note: Shibuichi is a technique using an alloy of silver & copper, whereas Shakudo is a technique using an alloy of gold & copper. These techniques are recorded as having been used prior to the 18th century to decorate Samurai swords, but with the advent of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), Japanese sword makers turned instead to using these techniques on various forms of metalware & decorative arts.
