About the Item

A Suzani, as it is called in Central Asia, is a type of needlework that we can see in the fascinating fine silk embroideries of Uzbekistan which are hugely popular decorative pieces of textile for their vivid colors, natural materials, bold, expressive, floral designs and superior craftsmanship. Uzbek women of the 19th century made a wide range of these embroidered textiles to be used as wall hangings, bed covers, screens, wrapping cloths, table covers and prayer mats in their homes and for their children’s future homes after marriage. Suzanis are embroidered with soft, glossy silk thread on hand-loomed narrow cotton panels, that are sewn together to create a large surface. Their design, motifs and techniques vary depending on the region they come from. Chain, satin and buttonhole stitches are frequently used. The resulting look is a timeless one that delights all senses. A Suzani can be as versatile as you’d like it to be. It can be used as a wall hanging to be seen and enjoyed as well as a bed cover, sofa spread, table cover, screen etc..
